Phone call that changed my life? Wow. I’ve got nothing. How strange. How is that possible? Letter that changed my life? I could come up with several of those: admission to college, notes from my family, the letter from the college friend who cracked up on a camel ranch outside of Alice Springs mid-back-packing trip and never really did get back to normal. Most of those are even saved in the archive. Emails that changed my life: could come up with some of those too. Jobs I didn’t get, jobs I did get, finding out long-lost friends were found again, emails announcing friends coming out of the closet, falling in love with my fiance via emails. Although we met online, he and I wrote to each other daily for more than 6 weeks before we met and for another month or two after we began dating we still wrote to each other daily. We didn’t talk on the phone until his first business trip, 3 months after we started dating! And funny, we still write each other daily emails. Those have definitely changed my life!
Postscript: I thought of a phone call. Perhaps not life-changing, but definitely memorable. My oldest nephew called to tell me that my sister was going to have another baby. I already knew this, but Ethan wanted to make the announcement. Only 3, he had apparently lost a few details in the newsflash because his announcement to me was “LaLa, mama’s going to have a baby tiger for me!” That second nephew has been my favorite baby tiger ever since.
